Gardening Advice
New York, NY – Having already earned top honors for Best Magazine and Best Graphic Design, Garden Design has now won the Gardening advice Writers Association's most prestigious prize, the Garden Globe Award of the Year for 2003.
The GWA selects one overall "best of the best" winner from among all its contest entries, which totaled 340 this year. To be cited for the Gardening advice Globe Award of the Year, an entry first must be judged the best in its own segment of the industry.
Garden Globe Awards Chairman Mike MacCaskey said the panel of 23 judges from inside and outside the gardening community immediately saw the superiority of Garden Design in relation to all other garden-related entries, including books, newspapers, broadcasting and electronic media.
"Garden Design captured what we have all tried to do in the gardening industry," said MacCaskey, a gardening book and magazine editor for more than 30 years.
"In the field of Gardening advice, Garden Design was simply head and shoulders above all the rest," said Bill Harvey, a GWA judge with more than 30 years in the field of publishing and graphic design.
The judges took special note of Gardening advice Design's unique ability to marry word and picture in a way that even trumped the old cliché. "It was more than just a case of their pictures being worth a thousand words," Harvey said. "It was clear that the design team spent a great deal of time thinking about the words and the pictures they were going to use. That's something you don't always see in other publications. But Garden Design demonstrated it is not just very good at that marriage of word and picture, but that it is consistently good at it, too."
Professional photographer Allan Mandell, another GWA judge, noted that the presentation of the photography in Gardening advice Design is the kind he always hopes his own work receives.
Flipping through the pages of Gardening advice Design is like opening that certain box of chocolates where you know every one is just as good as the other," Mandell said. "They're willing to be daring with their layouts, not afraid to let a stunning photograph bleed across the page. It makes it very exciting for the eye."
